The Journey to Less: Letting Go

It's usually pretty easy for someone to declutter their home. All the excess is staring at us and we can easily part ways with it. So what about all the stuff that is left? All those things we might use someday or the extras "just in case". That might be more of a challenge.

Minimalism is all about letting go though. It's about freeing up our space and minds. For me, I want to replace all the chaos that more things bring and fill it with peace and freedom. I want to focus my energy on admiring the things I love, sitting quietly (and not distracted) with the Lord, and enjoying my family without the "guilt" that comes with a cluttered home. Further, I don't want excess in my home. I want all my time and resources to go towards a bigger purpose in life. My life of purpose is to live to glorify God in all I do.

So what I've resolved to do is get those things that are taking away from my goals out of my home. Sure, there are many things I like but it doesn't mean I need all those things. My aim is to find contentment in what I already have or, if I do need to purchase something, to do so with purpose.

As you choose what to get rid of ask yourself if you've used it recently or if you will need to use it soon. Is it sentimental? You may want to keep it then, but maybe it should be on display somewhere nice instead of collecting dust. Are you only keeping it because someone gave it to you?

Don't be afraid of hurting someone's feelings. If they ask tell them your use for it was over and you've let it go so someone else can enjoy it. There's no shame in that. Don't keep things in your home that you aren't proud of or that don't add value to your life in some way.

Take time to decide what you want your life to be. What is your purpose? Is all that stuff taking you away from that purpose? Then let it go.
