Is Minimalism Right For You?

Maybe you've been reading along and you're not sure if you want to be a total Minimalist or exactly what your thoughts are on how many possessions you own. Let's talk about what level of materialism you're at right now to help you get a better idea of where you want to be.

On one end of the spectrum a home might be filled to the point of overflowing with possessions. Maybe so much that rooms in the home can't be enjoyed. Whole rooms might be filled with items that are never used but they can't bring themselves to get rid of them. The person shops often even to the point of owning several of the same item. There is a deep psychological connection to the things in the home sometimes even trash. The connection is so deep that they can't throw away or get rid of anything. This is known as hoarding.

Then there is Minimalism where a home only has necessities or things that a person feels a deep connection to. The home is open and full of free space. Only things that bring purpose or value to the home or person are purchased. Items are often purged from the home.

Somewhere in the middle is where most people probably fall. They don't live in excess but they have a lot of belongings. Maybe they have extra storage outside of the home. There is a combination of things in their home that they love or have sentimental attachment to and things that they really don't need. They might want to get rid of clutter but they want to keep most of their things.

Where do you fall? I would suggest you ask yourself a few questions.

1. Does the amount of things I own bother me?

2. Do I spend most of my time cleaning and organizing my things?

3. Am I constantly searching for things in my home?

4. What do I want to spend my time on?

5. What are the things in my home that I treasure the most?

If you find that you are frustrated with your home and that the things that you treasure most aren't found in things then you might want to explore minimalism more. Take a step today and take 30 minutes to put things you don't want or no longer use in a box. Take it to your nearest thrift store or Salvation Army. Do you feel better? Maybe you are really a minimalist at heart!
